This lecture will allow the practitioner to gain knowledge in expected laser application outcomes in addition to the treatment and management associated with certain ophthalmic laser procedures including YAG capsulotomy, peripheral iridotomy, and SLT.

Preparing for Office-Based Surgical Procedures 2 NJSBO TPA Credits #396-2025 / CE Broker # 20-1124032
This lecture serves as an introduction to minor office-based surgical procedures in the optometric practice. We will review proper instrument sterilization and aseptic technique along with preparation of a sterile field. Types of injections, needle and syringe basics, and appropriate injection preparation are also included. Incision and curettage of chalazia including setup, instruments, anesthetic use, and discarding of surgical supplies are discussed.

With the current climate of health inequity, patient access to care, and advancing technology and education, attendees will learn how optometric care must evolve and progress in order to meet ever-increasing patient demands.

Coding for the Expanded Scopes of Practice 1 NJSBO Regular Credit #399-2025 / CE Broker # 20-1124100
This course will review the coding for the new expanded surgical procedures that many states can now perform. Includes coding for treating and removing various types of lumps and bumps as well as coding and documentation for minor laser procedures.

Courses presented at this event will be New Jersey State Board of Optometrists (NJSBO) and CE Broker Approved only (and are non-COPE courses). Courses will be accepted for CE credit in NJ, NY, PA, and FL. If you are licensed in any other state, please check with that state's Optometry Board to inquire if these courses will be accepted. Course outlines and speaker CV's will be added to the NJSOP event handout hub. A separate email will be sent to all registrants with instructions for accessing the handout hub when content is available.
Meet the Speakers
Alissa Coyne, OD, MS, FAAO, FASOS
Dr. Alissa Coyne graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in biobehavioral health. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University and completed a Primary Care residency at The Eye Institute. Dr. Coyne recently completed a master's degree in pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University. She is an Associate Professor at Salus University teaching ocular pharmacology and ophthalmic lasers and minor surgical procedures. Dr. Coyne has special interests in ocular disease, emergency eye care and ocular pharmacology. She has lectured nationally and internationally. Dr. Coyne is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the American Society of Optometric Surgeons.
Daniel Epshtein, OD, FAAO
Dr. Daniel Epshtein is an assistant professor and the coordinator of optometry services at the Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital ophthalmology department in New York City. Previously, he held a position in a high-volume multispecialty practice where he supervised fourth year optometry students as an adjunct assistant clinical professor of the SUNY College of Optometry. Dr. Epshtein’s research focuses on using the latest ophthalmic imaging technologies to elucidate ocular disease processes and to help simplify equivocal clinical diagnoses. He lectures on multiple topics including multimodal imaging, glaucoma, retina, ocular surface disease, and perioperative care.
Harvey Richman, OD, FAAO, FCOVD
Dr. Harvey Richman is a graduate of the New England College of Optometry where his education emphasized the evaluation of children with behavioral and perceptual difficulties. After several years of pediatric practice and research, Dr. Richman became only the 23rd doctor currently practicing in New Jersey to achieve the credentials of Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. This was immediately followed by earning the credentials of Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. After graduating, Dr. Richman earned the title of Therapeutic Optometrist from the state of New Jersey, allowing him to treat and manage eye disease with medicine. Dr. Richman practices optometry in Manasquan, NJ.
Special Advocacy Presentation by Michael Veliky, OD
Dr. Mike Veliky graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and completed his Optometry degree at The New England College of Optometry. After completing his residency at Omni Eye Services, he joined Omni as Center Director of the Rochelle Park office. He serves as adjunct faculty at the New England College of Optometry, SUNY College of Optometry, Pennsylvania College of Optometry, University of Houston College of Optometry, Inter-American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry, and UC Berkeley College of Optometry. Dr. Veliky is the current NJSOP Legislative Committee Chair.
NJSOP CE Event Registration Refund Policy
In the event an NJSOP continuing education event attendee wishes to rescind their event registration, refunds may be requested through email or by mail to NJSOP. Refund requests received at least 30 days before the event will receive a full refund. Requests made 14-29 days before the event will receive a 50% refund. Refunds will not be issued within 14 days of the event. However, registered attendees who experience an extenuating circumstance that prevents them from attending the event can request refund consideration via email or by mail. Refunds will be provided in the manner in which the registered attendee paid.
