This course will review how the scope of myopia management has changed in the last twenty years. It will provide a brief overview of the myopia epidemic, including possible causes and comorbidities associated with myopia progression, and when treatment should be initiated. Important research studies will be discussed that have provided the foundation for our current clinical treatments, including a review of treatment modalities and the research studies that have demonstrated their safety and efficacy. New developments and studies currently underway will be presented that may expand our treatment options and improve upon the ones currently available.

Herpetic eye disease is commonly experienced in most clinical eye practices. The two most common ophthalmic entities seen include herpes zoster ophthalmicus and herpes simplex keratitis. Clinical features to help differentiate herpetic eye disease from non-viral conditions will be highlighted. The renewed importance of serology testing will be shared. Special attention will be given to oral treatment options and strategies to help avoid herpetic eye disease with vaccination. Concerns relating to viral resistance will be raised and new studies are offered to help better manage these conditions.

12:25 PM - 1:25 PM   -  Buffet Luncheon and time with exhibitors

1:25 PM - 3:15 PM  -  Life Threatening Signs & Symptoms That Can't Be Missed!
Joseph Shovlin, OD, FAAO
2 hrs. NJSBO TPA Credit # 477-2025
CE Broker # 20-952455

There are many life-threatening eye signs and symptoms that present on a regular basis to the eye care provider. Some present as corneal fascinations for metabolic, inflammatory or even infectious etiologies. Other signs and symptoms may simply present as seemingly benign flashing lights. Most often photopsia is related to vitreous changes that cause entoptic phenomenon. Unfortunately, the symptoms associated with flashing lights might represent something completely unrelated to vitreoretinal phenomena, namely a vascular, neoplastic, or neurologic etiology. Often these conditions carry significant morbidity, even mortality concerns and can’t be missed. This course will examine the differences in presentation and cite several case examples of photopsia not related to vitreoretinal conditions such as giant cell arteritis, artery occlusion, patent foramen ovale, neoplastic lesions, Purtscher-like retinopathy, and cerebral aneurysm. Several other case examples will be presented including pigmented lesions of the eye and various eye toxicities related to new immunologic treatments for cancer.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING CE CREDIT:
