Special Olympics Volunteers 2012

2014 Special Olympics National Games
Monday, June 16 - Thursday, June 19
The College of New Jersey
Ewing, New Jersey

It’s time to request volunteers again for Special Olympics Opening Eyes, but THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT.

THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT as New Jersey is hosting the Special Olympics National Games and athletes and their families from all over the US will be headed to the Garden State. NJ plans on providing the best Healthy Athletes Program ever with Optometrists (Opening Eyes), Dentists, Podiatrists, Physician and Physical Therapists collaborating to provide care and education to a population so in need.

THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT because we are not evaluating athletes on the weekend, but Monday to Thursday June 16th through 19th between 1 and 9 PM at The College of New Jersey. We prefer volunteers to work for any 2 nights to minimize our training costs and background check costs associated with credentialing volunteers, but one night volunteers are welcome.

AND THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT because the founder and driving force behind Opening Eyes, Dr Paul Berman, our dear friend and mentor, has been taken from us too soon. We know how hard Paul worked and how he looked forward to seeing the national games come to New Jersey. He has literally traveled around the world to bring Opening Eyes to athletes with intellectual disabilities, and now New Jersey is to be the focal point. We cannot and will not let him down as he continues to lead us through his spirit and legacy.

PLEASE make this the year you join us! As Paul always correctly pointed out, you will receive much more than you give. In this challenging time for all of us, this is an opportunity to do something so rewarding that it will remind you why you became an optometrist!

WE NEED 30 OPTOMETRISTS and 13 OPTOMETRIC STAFF MEMBERS EACH DAY! Doctors fly in from all over the country to participate at their own cost—and you can participate for just the cost of a drive to the center of the state. Some details:

  • A boxed dinner will be provided in the volunteer lounge.
  • Hotel rooms are not provided for the national games as all hotel rooms in the area are booked with delegations from throughout the US.
  • Volunteers may be subjected to security checkpoints as the national games are a much larger production with tighter security levels.
  • Photo ID’s will be issued—this is not something that you can sign up for at the last minute.
  • Volunteers will be assigned stations within the Opening Eyes venue based on their license level (Optometrist, Ophthalmologist. Optician, Optometric/Ophthalmic technician, optometric office staff or layperson with no eye care experience)

TO SIGN UP, please click on the link below, after entering in your email and password make sure you select Healthy Athletes and after selecting your T shirt size please enter in EYES as the access code.
